Alberta Student Visits Grade Three Class at Sullivan Community School

On January 19th, Sierra, a grade 3 student from Banff, Alberta, and her parents, visited Ms. Thomson’s grade 3 class.

The class is working on the Nobody Project. This project, which is jointly sponsored by the local Rotary Club and Sullivan’s Community Council, encourages each student to do something to make the world a better place and then report to their class. It exemplifies character traits and promotes good citizenship.

Ms. Thomson heard a report about Sierra’s efforts to raise money for the Alberta Birds or Prey Foundation after a golden eagle had been found seriously wounded in Banff and required extensive care. She discussed with her class how children can help protect animals, making the world a better place. The students wrote letters of support and admiration to Sierra. Sierra’s family contacted Ms. Thomson explaining that they would be in the area and Sierra would like to visit.

During her visit, Sierra shared copies of the media coverage she had received, and the scrapbook she had compiled about “Spirit-the Golden Eagle”.

This is a wonderful example of how technology can bring students from across the country together. On January 27th, Ms Thomson’s grade 3 students held a non-fiction read-a-thon and raised $75.00 to send to the Alberta Birds of Prey Foundation in support of Sierra and Spirit.
