Rockwood Centennial Public School - Upper Grand District School Board - Who Is NOBODY?

Amazing Class of the Week!

I decided that kids these days need to think of others first instead of themselves— Deepti Celetti, teacher

School of the Week Teacher: Deepti Celetti

Grade: Grade 2

School: Rockwood Centennial Public School

School Board: Upper Grand District School Board

1. How did you hear about the program?

I attended an ETFO conference called And Still We Rise Conference and this program was presented at one of the workshops.

2. Why did you decide to participate?

I decided that kids these days need to think of others first instead of themselves so instead of having a Star of the Week where the focus is on the child, I thought a Social cause or action would help them become better global citizens.

3. What is the biggest impact/change in your class ?

The kids have taken ownership of Nobody and feel that they truly can make a difference through their actions.

4. What is the biggest impact/change in one of your students and please share an example of one student’s project?

One of my students wants to raise awareness of the plight of Syrian children to the point that he wants us to raise money to help arm the rebels so they can fight the government. Obviously, I had to re-direct his misplaced sense of right and wrong. He seems very passionate so we’ll see what action he decides to undertake. A couple of my kids have decided to continue their action of raising toys for tots as an ongoing thing each year. A couple of my kids have decided to continue their action of raising toys for tots as an ongoing thing each year.

5. Example of one student’s project:

One student went to visit the Humane Society to find out what the needs of the animals were and then proceeded to make an announcement over the PA requesting donations as well as making a poster to distribute to the whole class.

6. Which whole-class Who Is NOBODY? Project did your class do? i.e. Free The Children or another organization or cause & Why did your class chose it?

We back onto a Conservation area so we decided to clean our yard – instead we discovered that many pet owners had left either poop or poop bags on the yard. This caused the kids much anguish as people were stepping in it. We decided to write a letter to the Principal, the caretaker, the Director of Education and The Editor of a local newspaper. We received responses from all and even though the school sign reflected our plight (picture attached) and our letter was published, the problem still remains although it is somewhat better!
