Free the Children - Who Is NOBODY?

At Who Is NOBODY? we like to work with organizations that involve children making an impact and changing the world. The first initiative that a class does together is a Penny Drive for Free The Children. Read a blog entry on Who Is NOBODY? by Free The Children employee Aileen!

Hi friends,

I’ve always heard the little rhyme, “Find a penny, pick it up and all day you’ll have good luck.” But walking around the busy streets of Toronto, I don’t find the idea of picking anything off the sidewalk very appealing, much less a penny. In fact, I try to pay in exact change as much as possible to avoid having to accumulate more pennies than I already have. A penny’s not good for much these days anyway, right?

Hundreds of students across Canada and even the United Kingdom are proving that idea wrong by taking part in the Who Is NOBODY? program. Who Is NOBODY? is a classroom-based kit for all grades that builds on each participant’s unique strengths while encouraging them to give and take respect based on their interests and abilities.

The program always begins with an altruistic project, and this year they have chosen to create penny jars for Free The Children! Right now pennies are being piled up in dozens of local businesses and other public venues, and at the end of the year all the penny jars will be combined to support Free The Children’s Adopt a Village projects. That means that the ‘worthless’ pennies will create big change in the form of goats, pigs, school supplies, water pumps and so much more!

These students have certainly made me give a penny a second glance. Who knows? Maybe they really are good luck.

Keep it real!

Aileen
